What is the Federal Court of Australia?

The Federal court of Australia is a court which has jurisdiction under the Federal Court of Australia Act 1976, and it formally came into existence on 1 February 1977. The jurisdiction is delegated from the High Court of Australia. When the Federal Court was created, it assumed all of the jurisdiction which was formally occupied by the Australian Industrial Court and the Federal Court of Bankruptcy. Essentially, the court is composed of the Chief Justice and others who are appointed. The formal duties of the Chief Justice are the orderly and expeditious discharge of the business of the court. There are more than 140 legislative instruments which give the Federal Court the jurisdiction to decide certain matters. Some of the most common matters which the Federal Court deals with are corporations matters, bankruptcy, intellectual property, admiralty, immigration and taxation. It also hears appeals from the Federal Magistrates court in non-family law matters and appeals from the family court as well as from the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island. The court also acts a district registry for the Australian Competition Tribunal, the Copyright Tribunal of Australia and the Defense Force Discipline Tribunal. There are also a number of corporate responsibilities of the court to provide publications in relation to senate reports and budget guidelines.
